Dragons were always a part of the world; from the first moments humans crawled from the depths of the oceans dragons were waging wars to dominate the skies, the trees, the lands and even the seas. With the passing of the ages, humans began to grow against the land, and dragons remained far from their discovery.
It wasn't untill horses were used as human transport that they were discovered, and by the development of iron swords their existance was accepted by all humans. Being the greedy and manipulative spieces that they were humans began to attempt to capture these creatures, and to further tame them so they could be used as transport, and even to build bigger more spectulative buildings.
Through trial and error humans managed to capture a dragon and to tame it; and from there things unfolded accordingly. Buildings were built bigger, and stronger with the help of dragon labour. The development of stronger weapons and armour came with the hide of a dragon, and as time passed the use of other creatures dwindled till they were almost completly forgotten.
Many things would've being created had not the dragons been used successfully; the creation of motor vehicles and guns for example, but such things would be considered trivial in a world of dragons.

Dragons Antiquities is a dragonrider rpg set in present time, with the exception that there is no such thing as guns or electricity, or even running water and dragons been used in replacment for these things. Dragons are used by young humans for fighting, racing, working and even compainionship; in these times no dragon stays wild for very long.
